Description: Jim Austin, a small town newspaper editor, discovers that his seemingly peaceful community is actually a haven for illegal bookmaking with most of the authorities and “respectable” citizens turning a blind eye to the matter. Indeed, as he investigates the murder of his initial informant, not only does the local police start harassing him and his staff, but the ruthless mafia boss running the mammoth operation has the paper’s young photographer beaten after he snaps an incriminating photo. Soon, after the murder of a second informant, Jim and his wife Marge are running for their lives, heading for the state capitol where they can present their findings to Senator Estes Kefauver’s Committee on the Investigation of Organized Crime.
