Description: Wang is a poor farmer who bears the brunt of living a hand to mouth existence. Into his life comes a new bride, O-Lan and his luck begins to change. Not only does she bear him a son, he soon makes enough money from his harvest to buy a bit more land. Forced to relocate to the city when famine sets in, it is again O-Lan that unexpectedly finds their fortune giving them the opportunity to return to the land that Wang holds so dear. With his new-found wealth however, Wang also decides to take a much younger and prettier second wife and again, his fortunes seem to change. It is only at the end that he realizes how important O-Lan was to the good life he has led...

Description: The prohibition of alcohol has led to a flourishing market of illegal liquors, dominated by organized crime. In Chicago the gangs control different parts of the city. As long as each gang limits its activities to its own district, there is peace between them. This balance of power is shattered, when the bodyguard Tony Camonte kills his boss Louis Costillo, and joins another gang. Tony helps his new boss, Johnny Lovo, to expand his market share by going into districts controlled by other gangs, kill their leaders and force pubs to buy illegal beer from Lovo instead. The situation quickly develops into an all-out war between the gangs. Tony wants to be the boss of the whole city. He starts disobeying Lovo, takes over his mistress Poppy, and finally kills Lovo. Tony is now the king, but he has one weak point: his overprotection of his 18-year-old sister Cesca. He forbids her to go out, and to flirt with men. When she breaks his commandments, he gets furious and forces her back home. That's when he becomes vulnerable for attacks from other gangs and the police...

Description: Having returned from fighting in World War I, James Allen doesn't want to settle into a humdrum life and decides to set off to find his fortune. He travels the length and breadth of America, working as a skilled tradesman in the construction industry. When times get tough however, he finds himself living in a shelter where an acquaintance suggests they go out for a hamburger. What the friend really has in mind is to rob the diner and Allen soon finds himself working on a chain gang with a long jail sentence. Allen manages to escape however and heads to Chicago where over several years he slowly but surely works his way up the ladder to become one of the most respected construction engineers in the city. His past catches up with him and despite protestations from civic leaders and his many friends in Chicago, he finds himself again on the chain gang. Escaping for a second time, he accepts that to survive, he must lead a life of crime.
