Crime does not pay - film noir shorts from Warner Brothers Noir Box Set (1940-1947)

Here are the five Crime Doesn't Pay Series Shorts that were included with the new Warner Brothers Noir Box Set

Forbidden Passage

Cast:

Addison Richards ... Frank J. Maxwell
Wolfgang Zilzer ... Otto Kestler
Hugh Beaumont ... Clements
George Lessey ... American Consul in Lisbon

This entry in MGM's series of shorts, "Crime Does Not Pay", features the U.S. Department of Immigration's efforts to halt the smuggling of illegal aliens into the country. Desperate immigrants, tired of waiting for legal entry, pay exorbitant fees and risk a grisly death to enter by illegal means.

A Gun in His Hand

Cast:

Tom Trout ... Police Officer Dennis Nordell
Richard Gaines ... Police Inspector Dana
Anthony Caruso ... Frankie

Dennis Nordell joins the police force with a long-range goal; use the knowledge he gains to pursue a career of undetected crime. Camouflaged by his uniform and badge, he pulls of a number of seemingly foolproof crimes, but is eventually trapped by an overlooked bit of evidence too small to be seen.

The Luckiest Guy in the World

Cast:

Barry Nelson ... Charles Verne
Eloise Hardt ... Martha Verne
George Travell ... John, the hired driver
Milton Kibbee ... Mr. Ashland, Charles' Boss
Harry Cheshire ... Mr. Mossley, Charles' Landlord

Charlie Vurn is always looking for the 'big score'. He bets on the horses and owes his bookie. At work, he 'borrows' from his accounts. After a terrible accident, he comes into a large sum of money and thinks he has it made...or does he?

Women in Hiding

Cast:

Marsha Hunt ... Jane Taylor
Jane Drummond ... Alice aka Bunny
Mary Bovard ... Mary Wilson
C. Henry Gordon ... Dr. Mansby, Clinic Administrator
Granville Bates ... Dr. Bates

It focuses on unwed mothers, specifically those who believe that they cannot confide in anyone and, therefore, go to clinics run by people more interested in profit than proper medical care. In this dramatization, women pay $500 to enter a clinic and must sign papers in which they agree to give up their babies for adoption. Childless couples then pay the clinic operators $500 to adopt the children.

You, the People

Cast:

C. Henry Gordon ... John 'Boss' Bailey
Byron Shores ... Deputy William 'Bill' Wright
Paul Everton ... Mayor James W. 'Jim' Wheelock
Matt McHugh ... Albert 'Bert' / 'Perky' Perkins

This entry in MGM's series of shorts, "Crime Doesn't Pay", features a big city crime boss's attempt to use his crime "machine" to fraudently win re-election for the current corrupt mayor. By using several illegal tactics, and aided by voter apathy, the crime boss nearly continues his control of the city.

Some news...

Hi guys

It is bad news and good news...

Bad news is that the situation among most popular 1-click hosters is still uncertain. After Filesonic and Fileserve accounts, now also Hotfile account of mine has been blocked and all files wiped out. Rapidshare, which now seems to be top choice of many people, reduces download speed of free users to average of 30 Kb/s, which is insane. There are some hosts that offer good speeds for free users, but not to popular or very strict when it comes to copyrights, so we still have to wait...

And good news is, as some of people asked for it, I will post a new movie soon as a Torrent file. My upload speed is slow and I can not seed it all the time, so cooperation of other seeders will be needed. I will check how it looks and what is the response and then re-consider future of Torrent files...

Recent filehosting issues and future of this site...

As most of you probably already know it, last week left us witnesses of one of the biggest 1-click filehosters turmoil in their history. Megaupload has been shut down, and two other major players, Filesonic and Fileserve, which unfortunately I have been using for last couple of months, essentially stopped their services, by not allowing sharing the files with anyone but original uploader and closing account due to copyright infrigements.

It lefts site's latest submissions virtually useless, as Filesonic main links are not working, additional Fileserve mirror files neither, with Hotfile links in place. In that situation none of these movies can be fully downloaded and only working sets are either Hotfile or Rapidshare links, where existing and not removed before.

As the situation is tense and future uncertain, for the time being, there will be no new submissions or any links replacements, until the dust settles and more light is shed on the whole situation. If situation gets cleared and filehosters get to the terms, I will make further decisions on future of this project, accordingly to the situation.

For any further info, please visit the site in future, any announcements will be posted here.

* Original theatrical trailer and Rialto release trailer
* Soundtrack - Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a jazz fan and Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film's soundtrack - possibly inspired by the Modern Jazz Quartet's recording for Roger Vadim's Sait-on jamais (Does One Ever Know), released a few months earlier in 1957. Miles was booked to perform at the Club St-Germain in Paris for November 1957. Rappeneau introduced him to Malle, and Miles agreed to record the music after attending a private screening. On December 4, he brought his four sidemen to the Le Poste Parisien recording studio without having had them prepare anything. Miles only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room, and, once the plot was explained, the band improvised without any precomposed theme, while edited loops of the musically relevant film sequences were projected in the background. Jazz Track, an album that contains ten songs from this soundtrack, received a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo or Small Group. This upload is also containing all of the outtakes and raw recordings without reverb which were previously unreleased. Personnel include Miles Davis on Trumpet, Barney Wilgen on tenor sax, Rene Urteger on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums

Tracks 1-16 are released for the first time, tracks 17-26 are the original release from 1958.
