Description: In London, Canadian-born American war veteran Bill Saunders, uneducated, has always felt most at home at war in it matching his violent temper, his war experience only exacerbating that temper. It is that temper that gets him into potential trouble as a barroom brawl leads to him accidentally killing a man. Initially able to escape that situation and evade the police, he subsequently comes into the realm of two people who will individually shape his life. The first is shy public health nurse Jane Wharton, who, despite the non-trusting nature of their initial meeting and knowing deep in her heart that he did something wrong, is nonetheless drawn to him as the two start to fall for each other, she potentially being the source of redemption he needs in his life. Threatening that potential redemption is the second, Harry Carter, who witnessed Bill kill that man, and who believes he can use that information to blackmail Bill into helping him in some big score.

Description: Wealthy Mary Haines is unaware her husband is having an affair with shopgirl Crystal Allen. Sylvia Fowler and Edith Potter discover this from a manicurist and arrange for Mary to hear the gossip. On the train taking her to a Reno divorce Mary meets the Countess and Miriam (in an affair with Fowler's husband). While they are at Lucy's dude ranch, Fowler arrives for her own divorce and the Countess meets fifth husband-to-be Buck. Back in New York, Mary's ex is now unhappily married to Crystal who is already in an affair with Buck. When Sylvia lets this story slip at an exclusive nightclub, Crystal brags of her plans for a still wealthier marriage, only to find the Countess is the source of all Buck's money. Crystal must return to the perfume counter and Mary runs back to her husband.

Description: Born in British India, Gunga Din always wanted to join the British army like many of his fellow Indians, but was not allowed to do so. So he starts observing them and learns accordingly. He befriends Sgt. Archibald Cutter, and warns him about a Thuggee uprising that may threaten their base. Sgt. Cutter and others are able to fend off the attack, but when Gunga gets information of a much larger rebel attack, Cutter accompanies him to the cult's temple embedded with gold statues of Hindu deities. Gunga finds out he is regarded as a traitor by his countrymen, and Cutter, as well as Sergeants MacChesney and Ballantine are held captive by the Thuggees in a bid to force the British to leave India.

Description: The owner of an important newspaper Austin Spencer opposes to the capital punishment and particularly to the prosecutor Roy Thompson, who has just succeeded in a trial based on circumstantial evidences. When a dancer is strangled and the police have no suspect, Austin convinces his future son-in-law, the prominent writer Tom Garrett, to plant circumstantial evidences to self-incriminate, while he would hold pictures, receipts and other evidences of his innocence until the very last moment. Later Austin would begin a campaign in his newspaper disclosing the possibility of sending an innocent to the electric chair. They decide to hide the truth from Austin's daughter Susan since she could not support the situation under stress. When the jury withdraws from the court in the end of the trial to give the sentence, Austin takes the evidences that prove the innocence of Tom from his safe, but has a car accident and dies. Tom is sentenced to death penalty and tries to convince Susan of his innocence as his last hope.

Description: Johnnie Aysgarth is a handsome gambler who seems to live by borrowing money from friends.
