Why we fight (1942-1945) - American propaganda WWII series from director Frank Capra

As we approach the 69th anniversary of the end of World War II, I'd like to share with you my dear visitors, this series of seven documentary films commissioned by the United States government during World War II whose purpose was to show American soldiers the reason for U.S. involvement in the war. Later on, they were also shown to the general U.S. public to persuade them to support American involvement in the war.

But first of all some more information about the whole series and couple of remarks:

1) All of these belong now to public domain now, which means as per Wikipedia entry :

In informal usage, the public domain consists of works that are publicly available; while according to the formal definition, it consists of works that are unavailable for private ownership or are available for public use. As rights are country-based and vary, a work may be subject to rights in one country and not in another. Some rights depend on registrations with a country-by-country basis, and the absence of registration in a particular country, if required, implies public domain status in that country.

2) As of most of public domain movies of pre-1950s, the quality of presented movies varies a lot, but mainly leaves a lot to be desired, although I did my best to find the best copies available. Most of the images are archival, made on the battlefield, a lot of pre-war footage is amateur so overall audio/video experience is not great, but it is interesting to see it and compare from the historical point of view. Expect a lot of noises, scratches, tears and jerks. I've included English subtitles for Chapter 1 "Prelude of War" although they may not be 100 % accurate and synchronized as the subtitles I've found online were of low quality. Some of them have packed bitsream, so may not be viewed on older DVD players.

3) As per IMDB comment: "Obviously, this was made before political correctness existed, and you can tell: there is talk of 'Japs', the Holocaust is largely ignored. Also, the movie is necessarily ambivalent about the Russian role, who were allies at the time. For example, the Molotov-Von Ribbentrop pact (especially the annex about the division of Eastern Europe) goes virtually unmentioned, and the Red Army's reasons for showing up in Eastern Poland are nebulous". Don't forget it is a wartime propaganda, not an actually historically correct movie.

4) Most of the films were directed by Frank Capra, who was daunted yet also impressed and challenged by Leni Riefenstahl's propaganda film Triumph of the Will and worked in direct response to it. The series faced a tough challenge: convincing a recently non-interventionist nation of the need to become involved in the war and ally with the Soviets, among other things. In many of the films, Capra and other directors spliced in Axis powers propaganda footage going back twenty years, and re-contextualized it so it promoted the cause of the Allies.

Why We Fight was edited primarily by William Hornbeck, although some parts were re-enacted "under War Department supervision" if there was no relevant footage available. The animated portions of the films were produced by the Disney studios – with the animated maps following a convention of depicting Axis-occupied territory in black.

* Prelude to war (1942) (51:50, 835 MB) (Academy award as Documentary Feature) – this examines the difference between democratic and fascist states and covers the Japanese conquest of Manchuria and the Italian conquest of Ethiopia. Capra describes it as "presenting a general picture of two worlds; the slave and the free, and the rise of totalitarian militarism from Japan's conquest of Manchuria to Mussolini's conquest of Ethiopia."

Hello, my dear visitors :)

It's been quite a long time since I started distributing the movies via Torrent protocol... Probably many of visitors didn't like the idea and are not visiting the blog anymore, but in my humble opinion that was the only way to keep posting the movies in wake of closure and change of terms of main 1-click Webhosters I used to use, like previously very popular Rapidshare or Megaupload.

I know that blog is not very appealing in terms of graphics, layout and amount of materials that still need to be re-uploaded, but without a professional help from skilled webmasters and graphics and without a day changing to at least 48 hours, that is all I can do with current amount of time and resources to my availability.

However, I still keep on upgrading and adding to my old and classic movies collection, which in last month exceeded a terabyte of data with idea of adding more and more of them on more frequent basis. To allow me to do that, I'd like to ask you, my dear visitors to help me cover some of the costs of seedbox, where the files are placed and from where they can be obtained on 99.9% of time, even if no other seeders exists.

Monthly cost of running my current seedbox is around 26 $, which may not seem as a huge amount of money, but any help in this regard is highly appreciated. I can't offer too much for any of the donators, but idea I got is that for any donation received, the donator can ask for any of the movie from the site, even if not available at the time, to be re-uploaded in faster manner, or make a reasonable request of material that is not available on the site at all, but is not too rare or to obscure to be found over the internet, but on other occasion could probably never be posted here. I wont't be able to fulfill all the requests one could have or promise superb quality if no good source is existing, but I will try to do my best. And for first donator of 5 $ or more, I will send a DVD with his/her choice of any material currently on site, anywhere in the world. Of course 4.3 GB of DVD data is not much but usually enough for 2-3 movies in quite good quality, so it is here for grabs.

I dont intend to make money off any donations I might receive and all donated funds will be distributed solely for purpose of maintaing monthly costs of seedbox, for which necessary proof will be provided.


I would also like to ask any experienced webmasters and/or graphics that may visit the blog for help in maintaning site source, layout or even making a completely new site with same content, after unfortunate event of previously existing .info domain, which unfortunately went out of my control after not renewing it on time

On the way home he has a problem with his car and is assisted by a teenager, Len, who then asks for a ride to the next town. Len is constantly talking about reform school and his "friend" who is good with a knife. Underhill becomes alarmed and purposely speeds in order to be stopped by the police. He tries to explain to the officer that Len is threatening, but there is no evidence to support that claim. He does however get a summons for court and is now really worried about his reputation. Len however presents him with an easy solution to his problem that tests his moral resolve and his self-righteous attitude.

Cavender's brother-in-law, Jack Fletcher, blames him for his sister's death and it's determined there is link between that and the insomnia. Cavender feels threatened but decides to pay him a visit to clear the air. However, things don't quite go as planned.

Description: Bert Haber is an old time piano player and he and Georgia, who sings, have proven to be a very popular nightclub act. Soon after, Bert is threatened when someone suggests he get an insurance policy. Things come to a head a few weeks later when Bert is approached by a police officer who has information and suggest that he is in need of protection. Bert doesn't quite realize who he needs protection from, however.

Description: Joe Helmer is having serious financial problems. He's been out of work for some time and his unemployment insurance has run out. It's only when he gets home that he finds a revealing note in the man's wallet.

Description: Helen Parch shares a party line telephone with several others. She likes to talk on the phone quite a bit but also listens in on others. She's warned by the police one day that a Mr. Miller, with whom she once shared the party line, has broken out of prison and that her life may be in danger. Years before, Miller needed to contact a doctor when his wife was ill and Helen refused to get off the line. Miller's wife died and he turned to a life of crime. Now he may be after Helen.

Description: While most of his fellow prisoners on death row spend their time hoping for a stay of execution, the occupant of Cell 227 waxes philosophical about the role of the prison system and the difference between a person murdering another and the State murdering someone. The professor says he's innocent and has told his lawyer not to pursue a stay of execution as he will only accept a full pardon. When the time of his execution arrives, he attacks a guard he's taken a dislike to, just as the Warden arrives with interesting news.

Description: Charlotte Hope arrives in the Wellington household to act as a governess to four children. She is a somewhat brash, opinionated person who boldly announces that she uses the Shartz-Metterklume method for teaching children. Her first day is dedicated to biology and the children spend the day collecting specimens. The parents are a bit more concerned when they start asking questions of a more delicate nature. After a few days of this, Miss Hope is released from her employment. As she arrives at the train station, someone disembarks asking if a Mrs. Wellington is there to meet her.

Description: Henry Taylor visits the town of Kirkland where 3 years before a bank employee, Arnold Mathias, had been convicted of stealing $200,000 from the bank where he worked. None of the money has been found and Mathias always maintained his innocence. It would appear that Mathias had recently been killed in an attempted prison escape and Taylor visits the bank manager telling him he's an author researching a book on the robbery. It turns out that Taylor is after something altogether different and all is not altogether what it seems.

Description: Bill and Andy Davis are driving an old tanker truck across the desert when, 85 miles from their destination, they truck develops engine problems. A passing car gets stuck in the sand and it turns out the occupants have kidnapped a young woman in Phoenix and are on the run with the $100,000 ransom they've collected. They decide to take the truck to continue their escape but fight over the limited water available. One kidnapper shoots the other, but he eventually dies of thirst. Turns out he was much closer to water than he thought.

When Nyla hears that Ray's wife can't swim, they start thinking that an "accident" might be in order, so Ray decides to take up fishing, his wife's favourite pastime. His plans don't quite work out, however.

Description: Lt. (j.g.) Doug Roberts is the cargo officer aboard the USS Reluctant, a re-supply ship serving in the South Pacific. World War II is coming to an end. The Germans have surrendered and the war in Europe is over and while there is no end in sight for the war in the Pacific, Roberts is beginning to feel that it will all pass him by and he'll never see any action. He has repeatedly requested a transfer to a combat ship but his Captain, Lt. Cmdr. Morton, knows a good thing when he has it and in Roberts, he has one of the best cargo officers available. Roberts cares about his zany crew and is often the buffer between them and the Captain who is a strict disciplinarian and who has not allowed the crew ashore now for almost a year. In return for the Captain granting the crew shore leave, Roberts agrees to follow his orders without comment or objection. The men think he's let them down but when they learn that it was Roberts who got them their shore leave, they return the favor in their own fashion.
