Description: Righteous district attorney Joseph Foster's main goal in life is to rid his city of the gangsters infesting it. In order to be even more efficient in his war against crime he plans to run for governor. One day he meets a strange, shadowy man, Nick Beal, who offers to help him to achieve his end. Beal convinces hesitating Foster by dint of easy money, easy sex with an alluring young woman and the promise of easy success. Joseph Foster soon becomes an influential politician but a corrupt one. A minister of God manages to show him that he has been the plaything of the so-called Nick Beal, who might be "Old Nick", that is to say Satan himself. Foster then decides to resign and to become an honest man again...

Description: During World War II Stephen Neale is released into society after having spent two years in a mental hospital. Before heading to London, he stops at the village fête where he wins a large cake. It's clear that something valuable was in the cake as it is forcibly taken from him on the train. He's certain that something, perhaps a crime, occurred and begins an investigation. He comes to believe that there is a Nazi spy ring at work but has difficulty getting anyone to believe him.

Description: The unsuccessful writer Don Birnham is an alcoholic. Description: Tony Wendice learns that his wife, Margo had an affair but even though it's over, he decided to kill her but chose to bide his time. He waited until Mark Halliday, his wife's boyfriend, returned to town. He then placed his plan in order. He summoned a man, whose reputation is a bit shady, and reveals that he knows his secrets but also tells him about his wife and her boyfriend and that they are each the beneficiary of their estates. He gets the man to agree to kill his wife and he has laid out what appears to be perfect plan. Only thing is the man was the one who was killed. Wendice trying to cover everything up, decides then to make it appear that Margo had an ulterior motive for killing the man. And it appears to be working except Halliday doesn't believe she's guilty and the police uncover a few anomalies.
